Our Regional Competitions

The region holds three main competitions and the three county unions (Hampshire, BB&O and Wiltshire) each takes on the responsibility for one competition. Hampshire and BB&O each organise the planning and on the day running of one of the combined BYC qualifying and adult events and Wiltshire the team event.

Please remember that fencing is run almost completely by volunteers; many of us also have families and full time jobs and none of us are paid to run competitions. Some coaches are professional and paid to coach but rarely paid to attend a competition, many coaches are volunteers. All of our referees are volunteers.

Literally hours are spent in advance of the day dealing with the entries and, for the BYC qualifiers, afterwards as well. Time is spent before the competition in planning; in an ideal world we would love to close a check in on time and start the event within half an hour and never wait more than half an hour between rounds – unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your outlook to life) we do not live in a perfect world. On the day the organisers arrive as early as they are allowed, often around 8am and so would very much like to be leaving by six; however in fencing no one will ever guarantee a finish time and if we were to run the same competition a week later under the exact same conditions timings would be different because of the folk that walk through the door on the day.
Help Wanted
If you would like to help at a competition please let us know – even just a half hour at either end of the day to help with set up or a spell making tea can make a big difference.  If you would like to do more like learning about competition assistance, refereeing, armoury or coaching, please ask about courses

Many hands make and light work!
